Zill’s Dark Surinam Cherry is a captivating addition to any garden, known for its bountiful yield of cherry-like fruits. These fruits are a sight to behold, transitioning from a deep red to an almost black hue, offering a visual treat that complements their sweet flavor. Whether you’re enjoying them fresh off the tree or incorporating them into your favorite beverages and desserts, these cherries are sure to delight.
Standing tall at a height between 10 to 25 feet, this variety of Surinam cherry is a testament to the art of grafting. The ‘Zill’s Dark’ variant owes its existence to the skilled hands of Wayne Clifton, who grafted it from Ray Jones’ renowned specimen. The result is a tree that not only retains the genetic traits of the named variety but also promises a unique charm that sets it apart.
The fruits of the Zill’s Dark Surinam Cherry are distinctively ribbed, bearing a resemblance to miniature pumpkins. As they mature, they undergo a fascinating transformation, changing from green to orange, and finally to a bright red or dark purple/black when fully ripe. This color journey is a spectacle in itself, adding to the overall allure of this plant.
In conclusion, the Zill’s Dark Surinam Cherry is more than just a fruit-bearing tree. It’s a symbol of nature’s bounty, a testament to the art of grafting, and a source of delight for those who appreciate the finer things in life. Whether you’re a gardening enthusiast or a lover of unique fruits, this plant is a worthy addition to your collection. Please note that availability may vary, as these plants are often in high demand due to their unique characteristics.
Note: To comply with interstate shipping rules, our citrus shipping inventory is kept in a separate greenhouse. Online availability reflects that greenhouse stock. In-store citrus is managed separately and may differ or be limited.
Inventory policy: Online citrus = greenhouse shipping inventory (kept isolated for interstate compliance). In-store citrus availability is separate and changes frequently.
Citrus Shipping Policy: Citrus ships from our isolated greenhouse on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to ensure quick transit and meet agricultural regulations. If your order includes non-citrus trees, they may ship separately and arrive before the citrus.

Winter Shipping Advisory
Cold Weather Alert: Tropical trees are highly sensitive to cold temperatures. During colder months, our greenhouses maintain warm, optimal conditions for growth, which makes plants more vulnerable to cold damage during shipping.
Recommendations: If temperatures along the shipping route are below 40°F, we recommend holding your order until it’s safe to ship. We will notify you if a delay is necessary.
No Freeze Warranty: We do not guarantee plants shipped during freezing conditions. Shipping in cold weather is at the buyer’s discretion and risk.
Shipping Schedule
Local (In-State) Shipments: Orders ship Monday through Wednesday to ensure delivery before the weekend. Most locations within the state receive deliveries in 1 to 2 days.
